Kia Boosts Telluride Production to Meet Surging Demand
Korean Automaker Increases Output at Georgia Plant as Second-Generation SUV Launches with Hybrid Powertrain
West Point, Georgia – Kia America has announced a significant boost in production capacity for its flagship Telluride SUV, raising annual output targets amid record demand for the three-row vehicle. The announcement comes as the automaker begins production of the all-new 2027 Telluride at its West Point, Georgia manufacturing facility.
The Korean automaker revealed plans to increase Telluride production to approximately 120,000 units annually, with expectations to reach 180,000 units following the full rollout of the hybrid variant. This represents a dramatic escalation from the original production target of just 60,000 units when the first-generation model launched in 2019.
“The Telluride has exceeded every expectation we had when we first introduced it,” said Sean Yoon, President and CEO of Kia North America. “With the addition of the hybrid version, we are confident that demand will continue to grow significantly.”
A Decade of Unprecedented Growth
The Telluride’s journey from modest beginnings to industry leader exemplifies how consumer preferences have shifted toward larger, more versatile vehicles. When Kia launched the first-generation Telluride in February 2019, the company projected annual sales of approximately 60,000 units—a figure that seemed ambitious at the time.
However, the SUV quickly captured market attention, earning numerous accolades including the prestigious North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award. By the end of its first full year on the market, Kia had already sold 75,129 units, surpassing initial projections by over 25 percent.
Sales momentum continued throughout the subsequent years, with the model reaching 123,281 units sold in 2025. The vehicle has become Kia’s second-best-selling model in the United States, trailing only the compact Sportage.
Manufacturing Milestone
The production announcement coincides with a historic achievement at Kia Georgia’s West Point facility. The plant celebrated its 5 millionth vehicle produced, marking a significant milestone since manufacturing operations began in 2009.
The ceremonial 5 millionth vehicle happened to be a 2027 Telluride Hybrid, representing three milestones in a single moment: the launch of the all-new model, the plant’s cumulative production achievement, and Georgia’s first-ever hybrid electric vehicle assembled in the state.
“We are proud to celebrate this achievement alongside our team members and community partners,” said Stuart Countess, President and CEO of Kia Georgia. “Five million vehicles do not happen by chance. They are the result of the teamwork that our employees have become famous for.”
The West Point facility, spanning 2,200 acres, serves as the sole global production site for the Telluride. The plant operates around the clock, producing approximately 360,000 vehicles annually across six different models, rolling out a new vehicle every 58 seconds.
Introducing Hybrid Powertrain
One of the most significant developments accompanying the production increase is the introduction of the Telluride’s first hybrid variant. The 2027 model marks a departure from the traditional V6 gasoline engine, replacing it with a more efficient hybrid powertrain.
The new Telluride Hybrid pairs a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with hybrid technology, producing approximately 334 horsepower. The hybrid system, developed using shared technology from the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid, delivers an EPA-estimated 35 miles per gallon.
Industry analysts project that the hybrid variant could account for 55 to 58 percent of total Telluride sales going forward. This anticipated shift reflects broader market trends, as hybrid vehicles now represent 12.7 percent of all new vehicle sales in the United States.
“Kia has been strategic in its electrification approach,” noted auto industry analyst Paul Eisenstein. “By launching the hybrid alongside the redesigned gasoline model, the company offers consumers a choice while positioning itself for stricter emissions regulations ahead.”
Market Implications
The production boost reflects broader trends in the automotive industry, where three-row SUVs continue to dominate sales charts. Family-oriented consumers increasingly prioritize interior space, advanced safety features, and versatile seating configurations—all areas where the Telluride excels.
Competitors including the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Hyundai Palisade face intensified pressure as Kia expands production capacity. The Telluride’s combination of competitive pricing, comprehensive warranty coverage, and impressive standard features has positioned it as a value leader in the segment.
Dealerships across the country report that Telluride inventory remains tight despite increased production. Average transaction prices have risen above sticker, with some dealers implementing market adjustments due to persistent demand.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Kia executives express confidence in the Telluride’s continued success. The second-generation model introduces updated styling, enhanced technology features, and improved interior materials while maintaining the practical packaging that made the original so popular.
The company’s investment in Georgia manufacturing provides strategic advantages beyond production capacity. By assembling vehicles locally, Kia avoids tariff complications associated with imported vehicles while reducing delivery times to dealerships nationwide.
“We view the Telluride as a cornerstone of our North American strategy for years to come,” Yoon stated during the production launch ceremony. “With manufacturing fully localized and hybrid technology now available, we are well-positioned to meet growing demand.”
